Well this is shocking. Tara is retiring. I'm very surprised at the timing with how much she talked about looking forward to the ACC and she just finished year 2 of her 4 year contract.
Congrats to the GOAT. She will be missed. I'm almost at a loss for words.

Wow wow wow.

We all knew this day would come. Thanks to Tara for so many wonderful memories. Her teams have always embodied excellence in all its forms. Truly, Stanford would not be the same without her, and I look forward to hearing her players reminisce about the good times.

I didn't see this coming at all (not yet, at least). Very grateful for everything she has done for the program and women's basketball. This will take me awhile to process.

I found this interesting

Quote:Negotiations are underway with Kate Paye, who played under VanDerveer from 1991-95 and has been a member of her staff for the past 17 seasons, to become VanDerveer's successor. Paye would become the program's fifth head coach beginning with the 2024-25 season.

you might think they would have had the succession plan all signed off before announcing Tara's retirement....

Yeah I think it would've been better to have that squared away at the same time as making this announcement. IE similar to when Muffet stepped down and Niele was introduced.

What an incredible career, Tara and I think this timing makes ALOT of sense.

RE: Coach Vanderveer Retiring - StanfordMatt - 04-09-2024

If there was even a shadow of a doubt that a deal wouldn’t be worked out with Kate, you can bet they wouldn’t have mentioned it in the press release. Speculation on my part, but they may not have wanted to announce it as a done deal so as not to steal any attention away from Tara’s moment.

so then why have the announcement about Tara at what appears to be ~8pm PT, you'd think it would make more sense to have it tomorrow (or maybe to have had it this) morning to get more coverage.

RE: Coach Vanderveer Retiring - fullmetal - 04-09-2024

Why even mention Kate then?  It could have waited 24 hrs, no?  :)

So, let's ask the key question: is Kate Paye the best person to become the new head coach of Stanford women's basketball? After all, naming a replacement as quickly as possible is not necessarily the same as selecting the best person for the job.

then why even mention "negotiations are underway" in this press release?

RE: Coach Vanderveer Retiring - BobK - 04-09-2024

The fact that Kate is negotiating as in signing a new contract is well she is the new coach
Sad will miss Tara as head of a great team for so many years. What a ride we have had

So that the AD isn’t bombarded with a million calls and emails from agents pitching their clients for the job lol.

RE: Coach Vanderveer Retiring - Baez87 - 04-09-2024

Well deserved, Tara, I hope you have years more to enjoy your retirement doing whatever you choose to do! You have brought joy to this fan over the years! I am grateful and happy that your current and former players got to honor you this year. I’m looking forward to attending future celebrations of your career and life.

RE: Coach Vanderveer Retiring - joemontes - 04-09-2024

Thank you, Tara, for a superlative coaching career that has catapulted Stanford
to become the 3rd all-time best WCBB program in NCAA history,
having propelled the Cardinal to 3 national championships and
14 of Stanford's 15 Final Fours!

This will be a tough act to follow. Unfortunately, her sudden exit
might trigger an exodus of Stanford's remaining top players
to the transfer portal as well as decommitment of already
signed and committed recruits for the 2024-2025 and
2025-2026 season.

RE: Coach Vanderveer Retiring - BobK - 04-09-2024

It’s the headline both Mercury and Chronicle

RE: Coach Vanderveer Retiring - crackpot - 04-09-2024

As we celebrated Tara breaking the record, and no doubt ever more so in the next few days, I found myself realizing just how responsible Tara was for so many of the great memories and experiences my family has had. I'll be forever grateful.

RE: Coach Vanderveer Retiring - WBB fan - 04-09-2024

So many great memories. She will mostly be remembered by the fan public for her wins, but I think she's equally, if not more, important for her mentoring of other coaches, her support of other teams in the Pac 12 and elsewhere. What a coaching tree she developed, what an example she set of cooperation and outreach.

As for timing, I suspect the demise of the pac-12 may have had something to do with the year. And announcing today could be related, at least in part, to the fact that the basketball banquet is tomorrow night.

I can believe that she just made her final decision in the last day or two. A decision sooner rather than later is important for recruiting. It's possible that Muir even gave her a deadline, as hard to believe as that may be.
With all the focus on the tournaments and WBB up until today, this is an ideal time to make the announcement. Although her last official day is May 8, I'm sure she can get some time off after the press conference tomorrow.

RE: Coach Vanderveer Retiring - martyup - 04-09-2024

I had a feeling that she might retire after this season, but I was hoping that her competitive spirit would keep her from retiring before Geno.

I sure hope that the last straw in her decision making wasn't Kiki telling her she is transferring.

She has given this program and womens' basketball so much.  What a legend.

RE: Coach Vanderveer Retiring - chrisk - 04-09-2024

Contrary to some uninformed speculation, she said tonight that the move to the ACC was not a factor in her decision.
