So sad to see her go, but I can understand, kiss of Tara and the travel challenge of the ACC. I was so looking forward to watching her next season, will now have to do it from a distance. A brobdingnagian loss to the Card!

It feels like we've had her for such a short time. She quickly became one of my favorite players and I wish her well.
Geez.
RE: Iriafen hits the portal -
Hoops9092 - 04-12-2024
Wow. Is this really because of her graduating early?
Even if she goes to USC or UCLA, which seems likely, she will be traveling to Big Ten country.

Wow I was hopeful she would stay
RE: Iriafen hits the portal -

Maybe Juju will evolve but I can't see someone like Kiki wanting to play with a 30 shot player like Juju, which makes me think UCLA or Notre Dame for Kiki. But I'd rather play for Gottlieb than Cori Close.
I'm also guessing the NIL opportunities are greater at USC than UCLA.

Agree re great loss. I don’t think ACC travel much of an issue…at least not if she goes to UCLA or USC. Big 10 travel not hugely different than ACC. I’m not sure I know why, but it is becoming increasingly apparent that Hanna jump is the unusual one now; someone willing to play five years at Stanford. Whatever Kiki’s reasons , we will miss her.
At the risk of trying to draw a curve with only two data points, her departure makes me suspicious that we aren’t having much success at getting transfers into LSJU. Or at least not ones that would convince Kiki there was a chance at a deep run in the NCAA tourney. Again, there may be no connection between her move and our transfer efforts. But it’s not a good omen.
RE: Iriafen hits the portal -
joemontes - 04-12-2024
With BRINK and to a lesser extent JUMP gone, it became obvious that Kiki will be
the focal and pretty much ONLY obvious target of WCBB defenses next season.
She probably didn't want the immense pressure that goes with that,
and may have partly contributed to her deciding to go elsewhere
as a grad transfer.
So with Kiki and Cam and Hannah gone, what's left of Stanford's roster
and who will be their GO TO player(s) on offense?
SF/SG - OGDEN
PF - DEMETRE
PF - AGARA
PF - PETERSON
C - UMEH
SG - BOSGANA
SG/PG - HARRIEL
SG/PG - CLARDY
PG - LEPOLO
PG - IJIWOYE
SG - PAPADAKI
SG/PG - GREEN
Offhand, I foresee eight-player regular rotation
consisting of OGDEN, DEMETRE, AGARA, UMEH,
BOSGANA, LEPOLO, HARRIEL and CLARDY.
PETERSON and IJIWOYE are completely unknown
to me, but hopefully can contribute.
PAPADAKI and GREEN hardly played the past two seasons,
and I don't see that changing moving forward.
Definitely a MAJOR CHALLENGE faced by the coaching staff!
Note: Edited to add HARRIEL

Perhaps I misunderstand, but, as the case of Maxime Raynaud shows, to opt to go into the portal does not imply that one is definitively "gone." At this point, who can rule out Kiki deciding to return? If she hasn't applied for or gotten into any Stanford grad program, then I would agree that it is unlikely she will return. Did Kate Paye try to talk her into staying? If she did, that doesn't speak well for her persuasive powers, since Kiki is a likely All-American next season were she to stay at Stanford.

To me, entering the portal on a "No contact" basis indicates she's got a better opportunity/offer elsewhere. That said, I'd be happy to be proven wrong.

;( very sad to hear this news.
RE: Iriafen hits the portal -
here4WBB - 04-13-2024
My guess is this: Tara and Kate knew early on that Kiki was headed for a three year completion of her undergrad studies. If Kiki wanted to continue playing, she needed a graduate program that fit her plans. Maybe Stanford doesn't offer a program she wants - but the point being that the decision and planning process to play another year AND be in a graduate program has been in the works for some time. I'm hoping that Kiki was open about that with staff and they were able to help her make the best decision. Remembered that Tara actually had Cam consult with a school of business expert on decision making about her choice whether to stay or go pro. Plus the timing of her announcement is discretely following the championship and Tara's news; the "no contact" on her portal indicates she's made a deal with a school and is not just shopping offers.
RE: Iriafen hits the portal -
Baez87 - 04-13-2024
It is possible that Kiki has not made up her mind about next year, but is keeping her options open.
One option could be a wait and see whether Stanford can get two portal commits, an effective big and a prolific outside shooter. Two possibilities are Reagan Beers from Oregon State and Villanova's Lucy Olsen or some other duo of that order. Then she could look forward to being on a national contender with players that complement her.
If Stanford didn’t counter her entry into the Portal, she would probably be the most sought after player in the country. I hope she will give Stanford a chance to make an offer. If Stanford does not or can not, our team will probably not recover.

I'm not quite sure how the transfer portal works. Why would any school that wants her not contact her? Throw enough money her way and maybe she'll change her mind. Why would she specify "no contact" if $$$$ is what she seeks?
Here's hoping Iriafen has a grad school acceptance letter from a school in her field that has a really good team, but that she is waiting on a decision by some Stanford graduate department.
I like Baez87's thoughts about waiting to see Stanford commits.

This whole mess is a potent reminder about how much damage to college sports has been done by the NIL and portal nonsense. Way to turn undergraduate sports into an industry, with athletes rented as mercenaries and team loyalry becoming a charade. Whoever is responsible for this pathetic mess should be pilloried and ostracized.

Yeah, this from the Chron article. That is...a...lot...(to start!):
Iriafen is in the portal with a “do not contact” marker, which typically indicates the player already knows where they are transferring to. One college basketball source told the Chronicle she was receiving offers upward of $700,000 in NIL money throughout the Stanford season from other collectives.

Does anybody have an idea of what the average WNBA yearly salary in be?
$700,000, that is better than the A&E fees I was getting for a long time, plus I had to share that with consultants.

Quote:Jackie Young of the Las Vegas Aces has the highest average salary in the WNBA for the 2024 season, according to Spotrac.
She is making $252,450 for the 2024 season as a part of a two-year, $504,900 contract.
...
The average salary in 2022 was $102,751, and it increased to $147,745 ahead of the 2023 WNBA Draft. If the trend continues, the average salary will likely increase again for the 2024 season.

Each rookie contract differs based on where the player is drafted. All 36 draft picks can sign a four-year contract with a team option in the final year.
The difference lies in the numbers. The top four picks in the first round earn the same amount of money, regardless of order. Those deals will be a four-year, $338,056 contract, according to Spotrac.
