2024 Cal Poly at Stanford Predictions Thread - george - 09-03-2024

Rough start, but we're still up on FSU in the conference standings, right?

RE: 2024 Cal Poly at Stanford Predictions Thread - paloalto - 09-03-2024

It's early.  A 12-1 season and invitation to the College Playoffs is still on the table.  I'm picking Stanford.

I enjoy the snarky comments!
I'm gonna count on Mick's assertion that we experience our biggest improvement of season from game 1 to 2,
and that Cal Poly doesn't read this board and so isn't aware of nor entitled to that improvement.
I expect our offense does get rolling, and the defense contributes a score too.
Coach TT subs in some less experienced guys and mistakes are made, so we allow some CP scoring,
and we don't run up the score as much as the yards difference might indicate.
Final of Cards on top 35-14.
After that, cheering, chest pounding, slaps on the back, attaboys, and all around gloating, .. at least until the next real FBS opponent.

Remembering what happened after the Colgate game, there shouldn't be a lot of gloating after this one.
On the other hand, maybe there should be, since it will be one of the few chances we will have to do so.

RE: 2024 Cal Poly at Stanford Predictions Thread - SkiBum80 - 09-04-2024

Watched Coach TT's midweek pre-Cal Poly press conference.
I really like Coach TT.  I hope I like him even more after this next game, and of course, by end of season.
I think he was realistic and observant when commenting on the team's performance vs. TCU, and in preparing for Cal Poly.
And as candid as can be expected in such a public forum, knowing that the most direct and sensitive stuff is saved for a closed locker room.
Here's my quick take on it (with disclaimer that others mighta heard it somewhat differently):
He is not taking Cal Poly lightly, regardless of them being FCS.
He knows all too well how an FCS team can beat a FBS team.
He is preparing for them as being a tough and capable opponent that we will have to bring our A game to beat.
Against TCU, he credited the D for creating turnovers and for some tough short field stops.
He admitted OLine must make better and more competitive blocks both for pass protection and for the running game, that suffered.
He admitted WR's must get more separation.
He admitted DLine must put more rush pressure on the opposing QB.
He admitted Daniels made some mistakes, in misreads and misthrows, but pointed out correctly he was under a lotta duress much of the game.
And also praised him for creating something out of nothing using his fast legs on broken plays.
He "predicted" Daniels to start, Lamson will get his snaps, and Coach is "hoping" Brown gets into the game.
On that last point I took it to mean, my own guess, is that Brown comes in only if we up by a lotta points (or down?!).
I thought Coach had a fair and accurate assessment of where the team was at.
Hopefully this translated into good practice this week to make improvements in the named areas.

RE: 2024 Cal Poly at Stanford Predictions Thread - qwerty49 - 09-04-2024

Cal Poly lost 27-21 to USD last week and averaged 0.4 yds per carry vs 4.1 for USD.  The box score shows a number of big plays including a pick six for CP and a TD fumble return for USD, ie it probably could have gone either way with a friendly bounce here or there.  CP QB was intercepted 3 times.

USD mustered a "sold out" crowd of 5700.

I think this will be a pass-fest unless we get a ground game going.

Scheduling potent Cal Poly in Palo Alto was intended to give the Cardinal a shot at winning a home game for the first time in two years. It may work.

Frankly, there shouldn't be a lot of gloating BEFORE this one. . . .

Could be!  But Coach TT doesn't want the credit! He was asked in the presser about scheduling Cal Poly at home and he basically demurred to indicate it was scheduled before he arrived and he doesn't have much say in the schedule anyway.  I'm reading a lot into it, but that's how I took his reply along with the body language.

I could not remember the last time Stanford won a home game, so I went back and checked. It turns out that our last home win was a 15-14 victory over Arizona State on Oct. 22, 2022 (reunion weekend). Josh Karty kicked 5 field goals, which tied a school record.

Since then, Stanford has lost 10 home games in a row.

We really need to win this one.

RE: 2024 Cal Poly at Stanford Predictions Thread - fullmetal - 09-05-2024

There probably aren't too many Stanford wins where we didn't score a TD.

WR separation matters more for some routes, less so for others.  If your QB can put the ball on a dime, just find the back shoulder and trust the WR to go get it (echoes of JJAW).

I didn't give Daniels enough credit for bailing and running effectively.  I will say that the seemingly-designed QB run plays did not look effective.  Can we get tunnel screens and wheel routes (that don't get sniffed out immediately like those ineffective sweep plays)?

However, on many throws, Daniels did have enough time to lock on...and on...and on...as the pocket collapsed.  I hope TT refined the quick throw offense and the power run offense this week.  They don't have to be staples against CP, but it'd be nice to show that the team can execute those plays.

If there is gloating after beating Cal Poly, the terrorists have won.  (Or something like that.)

I need to see something this year that eliminates my nagging feeling that Stanford found its Gerry Faust.*

*and it is so bad that we're prone to celebrate Faustian seasons around here.

RE: 2024 Cal Poly at Stanford Predictions Thread - newguy - 09-05-2024

Stanford 45
Cal Poly 20.

anyone know how to watch the game if you live in Southern California?
also, is it me, or does it keep getting hotter?

48-7 Cardinal. Don't think this one will be close. First time in a while that this program plays a team that they are better than and they will take full advantage. I think the guys are going to have a lot of fun in this one heading into the bye week.

I was hoping you weren't going to say that, because I was thinking the same exact name...

31-7 Stanford.

CPsteeple - CPSteeple - 09-06-2024

Cal Poly alum here, but long time Stanford fan. Been following CP football for the last decade or so, and currently have a family member who is a freshman on the CP team. Having a somewhat intimate knowledge of the Cal Poly football program, this is not a team that should give Stanford much trouble. If Stanford doesn’t win by 20+ points, we are much worse than I thought.

Stanford 38
Cal Poly 7

The Vegas betting line is Stanford -14.5 which is a lot tighter than I would have expected.

RE: 2024 Cal Poly at Stanford Predictions Thread - thunder_chik - 09-06-2024

Stanford 35, CP 17

As soon as we have a comfortable lead, I think Coach T starts rotating in some of the 2nd string.  Doesn't risk injuries to our starters.  Finally, we break our streak of 10(?) home losses.
