mBB: Stanford vs. Cal Poly, Saturday 7pm -
skip75 - 11-30-2024
Stanford favored by 14.5, over/under 152.5, implied score - about 83-69. Stanford #72 per KenPom, Cal Poly #243. After a couple competitive games, this should be a return to the "cupcake" part of the schedule. Hopefully, we will see a strong bounce back from the Grand Canyon loss in this game and on Tuesday vs. Utah Valley heading into the ACC opener at Cal a week from today. Stanford has 9-1 record vs. Cal Poly, including an 8-game winning streak.
The Mustangs 4-4 record includes wins over Menlo (99-66), Seattle (75-71), Eastern Washington (82-78), and Grambling St (82-79). The 4 losses have been to USF (86-78), Cal (91-73), ASU (93-89), and St. Mary's (80-66).
Cal Poly is coached by Mike DeGeorge. He has 24 years of head coach experience at the Div 2 & 3 levels and is in his first year at Cal Poly. He came to SLO after 6 seasons at Div 2 Colorado Mesa, bringing 4 players along. He is known as an offensive coach, leading high-scoring attacks. Cal Poly currently ranks among the top 10% of Div 1 teams in 3-pt shots attempted (29.0 per game) and made (10.1 per game). Stanford's 3-pt numbers are 26.3 attempts per game and 8.0 made per game.
Likely starting five includes: #0 Jarred Hyder, 6'3"/185 GR (previous stops - Fresno St & Cal) leading scorer (14.3 ppg) and assists (3.25 per game); #40 Isaac Jessup, 6'2"/195 Sr (Mesa transfer) 13.3 ppg; #11 Owen Koonce, 6'5"/195 GR (Mesa transfer) 14.0 ppg; #2 Mac Riniker 6'5"/210 (Mesa transfer) 10.9 ppg; and Luka Tarlac, 6'7"/200 (from Serbia - played 2 years at Utah) 4.9 ppg. Leading 3-pt shooters are Hyder & Koonce, combining for 48-123 (39%). Together, those 2 players score over 70% of their points from beyond the arc.
Leading rebounders are Koonce (4.9 per game), Riniker (4.8), & Kieran Elliot, 6'6"/215 Soph (4.8). Biggest players on the roster are Paul Bizimana 6'9"/215 & Aaron Price Jr. 6'8"/225. who both play about 10 minutes per game. Seems like it could a prime situation for Maxime to continue to dominate and hopefully for Cammann and Okpara have big games.
Cal Poly has played reasonably competitive games against some good teams (St. Mary's, USF, & ASU), but will be looking for their first win against a Power 4/5 program since beating #11 UCLA 7-68 12 years ago.

Call Poly beats Stanford 97-90.
We were unable to stop their 3 point shooting in the second half and wasted a 13 point lead.

Tuned into the last few minutes. Ugh.
Heard we got outscored in the paint. And Reynaud only had 5 rebounds. That's not a winning combination. =/

Cal Poly with 63 points in in the 2nd half alone! Oof, defense was not there.

Horrible defense.
I can't remember when the opposing team had so many wide open shots...ugly!

A tall order to win a game when your opponent scores on like 90% of their trips down the floor in the second half. I think Mike DeGeorge chanted a spell in the locker room that morphed Owen Koonce, Jarred Hyder and Isaac Jessup into Steph Curry clones.
Someone said in an earlier game thread that they believe in what Kyle Smith is building. I would amend that slightly to say that I believe in what Kyle Smith
plans to build. He is just starting to break ground; this thing isn't going to be put in place in a week, or a month, or a year.......

I wonder how many Haase-like years will be tolerated while Smith is in the process of building the program.
2024-2025 is starting to look like one.

Defense was bad yesterday, but I think that offense is our biggest problem right now.
First 4 games we averaged 1.26 points per possession. Last 4 just 1.06. The median for D-I is 1.02. And we've played one of the easiest schedules in the country so far.
Basically, 3-point shooting has dried up since the first part of the season (37% the first 4 games; 26% the last 4 games). With 3's not much of a threat, we're not getting good shots anymore, and even mediocre to bad teams have been able to shut us down by clogging the lane. And that leaves us pretty much with either Raynaud or a very difficult shot by someone else.
When you're hitting all your 3's, any coach looks like John Wooden. But now that outside shooting isn't hitting, Smith needs to do something different to generate some offense.

Being at the game my main thought we don’t play much D in the paint. What 6 or so uncontested scores in the paint. With Reynaud roaming outside the paint
Of course then we didn’t guard their threes. Offense is fine I line all the drives. Geeler back scoring
But bottom line they had the better players

On a good Stanford team, only Raynaud, Blakes, and Sellers would be getting significant minutes. The fact that we are playing others, Benny and Agarwal in particular, is a sign that CKS still needs to upgrade the talent on the team to be competitive.
I can see us upsetting a few teams since we are capable of getting hot and hitting plenty of threes, but I will be happily surprised if we end the season with a .500 record.

It's almost like this team has very little experienced high-end talent (unlike Haase's teams year after year after year...not making the tourney with last year's talent was a crime) and should never have engendered the expectations that came with blowing out cupcakes.
Maxime, a couple power-conference rotational guys, and a box of misfit toys do not exactly a good team make.

Your last sentence sums it up concisely, Sam. Getting smacked by a 4-4, 235th-ranked, 14-point underdog polytechnic is pathetic. Bring on Lehigh or Swarthmore!

My God, if Cal Poly had better players than we do, what's it going to be like when we play the better ACC teams?
Scary.
P.S. If we didn't play defense in the paint or guard their threes where did we play defense?
I guess somewhere between the paint and the three point line.

Whether or how long this will survive conference play is doubtful, but Stanford currently has two of the top three players in the ACC in
PORPAGATU! in Maxime Raynaud and Jaylen Blakes. Both are also in the top 40 players in PORPAGATU! over the entirety of D-I.
