Tess Heal in Portal -

I think this is a loss. Heal was the most accomplished transfer in last year and IMHO , one of our better players. Yes she seemed a bit slow on defense and didn’t get her shot off quickly enough but she could score and would attack the basket. It would have been nice to have had her for our celebrated Aussie newcomer next year.
If a conscious decision was made to let her go, which I kind of doubt, than you have to ride with the coaches. If it was lack of NIL , we are I real trouble as I doubt she will get big bucks anywhere..unless SMU wants her.
No more illusions about the value of a Stanford degree. Seems to be worth less than one years delta NIL. All in all, not a good sign.

I find this situation really odd. Why come to Stanford for just one year? Academically it makes no sense, unless she finished her degree. Athletically, I don't know. This last season was a down year, and no guarantees (although there's always hope) that it will be much better next year. So maybe she's looking to be at a winning program where she'll have more exposure. I doubt she'll get more PT at a higher-ranking program. Anyway, it's a minor loss for Stanford. Just odd.

Sellers just did the same thing with the men’s team. He was a starter unlike Heal, but no superstar. I expect he is getting a bigger NIL number vs. Heal. But apparently the degree has little to no value for some players these days vs. 1 year of NIL.

Transfers like this are a head scratcher to me. She's not going to be playing professional basketball after college.
She certainly has every right to transfer under the current rules and I wish her well. But it almost seems like average D1 athletes are being brainwashed into thinking if everything isn't perfect the best solution is to transfer. I'd be interested in her story because it seems like a misguided career move to an outsider like me.

BACardinal - 04-07-2025
I think she sees her playing time diminishing next year with the addition of Swain and the breakout year Clardy had. I wouldn't be surprised to see her transfer down to a smaller school like Gonzaga or just a team where she will be a starter.
As for a professional career, she will 100 percent play in the WNBL. For most Australian's that is the goal and she has the talent to play in that league. Over the past couple of years I have followed the WNBL because of Mikaela Ruef, Kiana Williams, Haley Jones, and Karlie Samuelson so I know she will have a roster spot after she graduates from college.

Maybe we're thinking about NIL the wrong way, at least in part.
We'll get a certain number of 18-year-old freshman recruits interested in graduating from the best University in the world. Others will want to maximize their NIL elsewhere, graduate...and then realize that a Tinkertoy Tech degree is not quite as compelling as that of Stanford. They're 23, they studied hard, graduated, but they have a year of eligibility left, so...perhaps we recruit, hard, all along an undergraduate's career.

yes, with swain coming in, tess would have little playing time. and maybe she gets a decent nil offer somewhere else.

I liked Heal as a player because of her willingness to drive and try and create a shot but she couldn’t crack the starting lineup of a pretty mediocre team last year. She was a defensive liability. ACC guards dribbled around her with ease. On offense her 3-point shot was accurate but very slow to get off so she needed to be wide open. Again ACC guards could easily contest and bother her shot. And she drove well against poor defenders but good defenders forced her to throw up some very poor quality circus shots.

I support the idea of recruiting hard, all the time, athletes that can be admitted to Stanford and help our programs. However, IMO the Tinkertoy Tech degree will work just fine for virtually all of them. Their career paths, even if they do not involve athletics, generally require a degree as a "credential", not as an actual tool. Almost any accredited institution can provide that.
It is possible that a very, very few may decide they want a graduate degree that allows them to move forward in an academic career track or they decide they want a technical/scientific/somewhat specialized career where a Stanford degree (and the associated education) would actually be useful to them. Maybe we could find one every five years. Getting them admitted then becomes the challenge. As we know from recent experience even getting students that have a Stanford degree admitted isn't at all easy. Somebody from Tinkertoy Tech will be much more difficult.

Heal posted a Steph Curry-esque set of shooting percentage totals of 50-49-87. It's a bit misleading because nearly half of her made 3's came in just three games, the season opener v Wazzu, and the conference games at Wake and vs. BC. Other than that, it was a small sample size.
And yes, forget about the "40-year decision." It's more like 40 weeks now, and will be even more so after the House settlement is approved?

I think that she saw that she would get little playing time behind Swain, Clardy, and Ijiwoye - who are all quicker and more athletic than her. Guards in the ACC are quicker than her and she may want to move to back to the WCC And I agree with BACardinal, she will be able to play in the WNBL and maybe the national team. There are other women's basketball leagues besides the WNBA and the top-tier European leagues. I wish her every success.

This is a board of mostly Stanford alums that made and believe in the 40-year decision - I certainly did and do. It's possible that high school basketball players now may not have that at their first criteria for picking a school - especially when schools are waving bags of money around. And what if it is not Tinkertoy Tech, but Notre Dame or Duke? Those are not bad schools...

There is also a certain 2-year starting PG who was injured just about all this year, and she may be coming back to recoup her starting position or get plenty of playing time off the bench.

I'm disappointed to see Heal go (assuming she does). I can understand the disappointment she might feel about the prospect of being a benchwarmer her last year, when there are plenty of schools that she would play for. If she goes, I hope she does well.
I am not a fan of Clardy. She's lazy on defense, often standing around watching from a position where she can do nothing to help. Many times I watched her leave her player, only to have her player score because she wasn't guarded.
I never saw that of Heal.

No, they're not bad schools, they're very good schools. It's the difference between great and very good and not bad. Even a 17 year old should be able to understand the difference, particularly a 17 year old who's done enough work and has enough talent to achieve in the first place.

They do understand the difference. For the vast majority, even those that have adequate academic credentials to do "better", the difference is operationally nugatory. There are a very few that have higher aspirations academically. If the aspirations are not there, why do the extra work? This is especially true if Stanford turns out to not be an immediate good "fit" socially, which is not uncommon for may freshmen, athletes or otherwise.
If one is an athlete going elsewhere can be very attractive because of NIL money. It can also be very attractive because they don't like Stanford all that much. The observable reality for the vast majority is there will be no difference in their post-college opportunities if they have a degree from a "not bad" or "very good" institution. They don't intend to go to graduate school or pursue an occupation where the source of your degree matters.
