Swim&Dive: Mostly ignore the ACC -
M T - 09-12-2025
Stanford posted
the schedule for Women's Swimming and Diving.
Home events are sparse: An early season tri-meet with ASU & Cal (2nd day is at Cal). Three months later, a dual meet with San Jose State. Well, I guess you want a day to celebrate your seniors.
Other than going to their regular invitational meet in Austin, the team travels no further east than San Diego (on the opening weekend) before the conference championship.
The in-season dual/triple meets involve UCSD, Cal x4, Hawaii, ASU, UCLA, USC, SJS.
The only ACC event is the conference championship near the end of the season in Atlanta.
A month later, they have to go back to Atlanta for the NCAA championship.
It doesn't seem that the Men's Swimming & Diving has the full season posted.
What they do have seems pretty much the same. The same tri-meet weekend at home (& at Cal) as the women, plus a late season senior day meet (a weekend after the women). A big meet in Texas (separately for swim & dive), but otherwise all in California, except the ACC Championship and the NCAA Championship. UoP, ASU, Cal x3, UCSD, UCLA, USC.
These schedules certainly save the time of the student-athletes and conserve money. I would say the schedules work well for preparing for the big meets.
While the men's schedule lists diving events, the women's schedule does not. The women's roster shows 3 divers (Fr., So., Sr.) and 22 swimmers.

This makes a lot of sense for events like swimming/diving, track/field, golf, gymnastics, which are really “tournament” sports (ie, sports where multiple teams compete at once). There is really no need for dual meets to be the same teams you later compete against in a tournament, so I hope we see more of that in order to minimize travel demands on students. Have local dual meets and one big ACC tournament before NCAA’s and call it a day.

We went to the M/W tri-meet last Friday at Avery. Huske swam and won the 100 backstroke, in addition to the butterfly on the 200 medley relay and the freestyle on the 4x100 relay.
The crowd was maybe in the dozens, i.e., a couple thousand fewer than the sellout in 1977 when Montreal Olympics hero John Naber and USC visited what was then known as deGuerre pool.
One more chance to see Huske swim at Avery, in winter quarter.

A few months ago as I was leaving Maples some tourists stopped me by the pool and asked me where the indoor swimming pool for competitions was located.
I told them that I didn't know of an indoor swimming pool and that the competitions were held at the pool next to us. They said they wanted to come see some competitions next season and asked where do the spectators sit to watch the races. Frankly, I have never been to a swimming meet and didn't know how to answer them.
Where do spectators sit to watch swimming meets?

In the bleacher seats on the north end (toward the track) of Avery - M & W swim meets (+ MWP & WWP matches & Synchro meets) take place in the short course pool below those seats, not in the 2 long course pools on the south end (closest to FB's practive field). Diving comp takes place in the 4th pool in the east part of the complex, closest to the football stadium.

Great! I didn't know the water polo pool was long enough for the swimming events. Good to know.

LSJU W swim currently ranked 3rd behind UVa and Texas. Last dual meet of the season tomorrow/Sat. 1/31 at Cal's Spieker pool. First event is at noon.
Last week, gold medalist and world champion freestyler and butterflyer Huske swam the backstroke and breastroke vs. San Jose St! Maybe she'll try a diving event vs. Cal :--)

LOL, yes she's incredible. Maybe after diving, artistic swimming?

For the LSJU M swim (ranked 8th) update, I was at Avery pool this afternoon for the Senior Day dual meet finale, the Big Meet vs. # 5 Cal.
Cal must not have rested at all for the meet, or maybe their swimmers competed in secondary strokes, because LSJU won just about every individual event, and the 4x100 freestyle relay, for a 181-119 total.
Afterwards, I caught up with a couple M swim alums from the 1980s glory days of the Skip Kenney era, and they said LSJU could finish in the top 5 at the NCAA meet in March. That would be the best NCAA meet for LSJU M swim since 2017.

Made the trek to Berkeley for the W swim Big Meet. Much closer than the men's meet yesterday. LSJU won the meet by 154-145 by winning the last event, the 4x100 relay, anchored by Huske, who also won the two sprint freestyles going away and anchored the medley relay. She didn't swim the individual butterfly races. Bell looked fantastic in the two breaststroke races, winning the 200 in 2:03, the fastest nationwide this season. She is over 1.5 seconds faster than anyone else at this point in the season.
An unexpected highlight was Huske swimming all by herself in the competition pool during the second intermission, staying loose for the relay, effortless gliding on freestyle and backstroke. Everyone else was in the warm up pool next to Haas Pavilion. I guess if you're a gold medalist and world champ, you get to warm up in the competition pool!
An unexpected lowlight was the lane 8 starting block literally falling apart after just two events, causing a near half hour delay as Cal staffers frantically tried to fix the starting block (running back and forth from the pool to the adjoining building) and then ended up replacing it with a new one. Lane 4's block, which Huske used in four races, was also a bit loose and Huske even pointed out the loose platform to the coaches. That block was not fixed or replaced during the meet. Sigh. With apologies to the small but mighty group of Cal alums who are loyal LSJU backers on this board, the equipment fiasco looked like a small example of the Cal athletic dept.'s budget deficit, in full public view.

Today is day 3 of the NCAA women's meet in Atlanta. After Day 2, UVa of course was in first (249), followed by Texas (183) and LSJU (173)

After Day 3, LSJU remains in 3rd, behind UVa and Texas. UVa is going to win, again, in runaway fashion. Tennessee is just 2 points behind LSJU.
The incomparable Huske won the 50 freestyle in reportedly the 2nd fastest time ever, 20.66. She is among the greatest ever for LSJU, along with of course, Ledecky, and Manuel, Summer Sanders, Janet Evans, Jenny Thompson.

It's a second place finish for Stanford!
Lucy Bell (SR, 200 IM), Torri Huske (SR, 100 free), and Ellie Cole (FR, platform diving) each won a national title, and with the additional finishes from the rest of the team, Stanford finishes with
four more points than Texas to overcome last night's 29.5 point deficit to secure the runner-up team title.

LSJU M swim in 10th place halfway through the NCAA meet being hosted by Jacket3ree alma mater, Ga. Tech.
Henry McFadden swam a fantastic anchor leg on the 4x200 freestyle relay last night, 1:29+, pulling LSJU from 6th all the way to 2nd. Tonight he took third in the individual 200 free, at 1:30+. He's on a decent trajectory for the LA 2028 Olympic team.
Texas leads, followed closely by Florida, then a large gap to ASU-Indiana-Cal.

Texas is led by Stanford transfer Rex Maurer. He just won the 400 IM tonight in an American record.

Son of former WSwD coach, Lea - now head WSwD coach at USC. Just lovely, or should I say loveless....
In coaches Lindauer, Jeffery, Lazor & Guttmann we trust!

LSJU M swim ended up 10th. Without McFadden and the divers they might not have been top 20. It's been 9 years since their last top 5 finish.
Less than 3 weeks to the M gymnastics championships.
