MBB: Stanford 76 -- UT Arllngton 60 -
skip75 - 12-17-2025
After the long road trip to San Jose, Stanford returns to Maples to take on the University of Texas at Arlington. Stanford is favored by 12.5, the over/under is 144.5, making the implied score 78.5-66. The Mavericks are 7-3, including 3-2 on the road. In the Western Athletic Conference pre-season coaches poll, they were picked to finish 4th (of 7). They are pretty young (4 Fr, 6 So, 1 Jr, 3 Sr), although all 3 seniors are expected to start. Their games have been relatively low scoring, averaging 74-64. They have held opponents to 40% FG shooting - 25% from 3. Their offense does not rely much on 3s - averaging 5/game on 28% shooting. Despite seeming to be a bit undersized, they average a +10.8 rebounding margin and get 4.7 blocks/game.
Projected starting line-up is:
#2 Raysean Seamster (6'7/200 Sr F) Leads with 15.9ppg and 6.9rpg. Shoots 56.3% FGs, but only 54.8 FTs (Rohosy-like?). Voted to the pre-season All-WAC team;
#42 Marcell McCreary (6'4/225 Sr G) 12.2ppg, leading 3-pt shooter (15/44);
#1 Cash Chavis (6'2/180 So G) 9.4ppg, leads with 4.6apg;
#34 Cameron Jackson (6'8/240 So F/C);
#4 Marcus Rigsby Jr. (6'3/200 Sr G).
The Mavericks have 10 players that average at least 10 minutes per game - and none that average 30 or more. On average, the bench players are smaller than the starters, although they do have a 6'11" player averaging 10 minutes per game.
With or without Okorie, it would be nice to see Stanford develop more consistency. They shot and rebounded well vs. SJS, but got in the Christmas spirit a bit too much with the 20 turnovers. Sure would be nice to see them keep the pedal to the metal when they get a 14-point lead. Also would be nice to develop a bit more depth, but it doesn't seem that there's much trust beyond 8 players (one of them being Okorie). That could be a problem throughout the season.

Rohosy dreams of being that prolific. Last time I saw his FT%, it's ~30%. He is a big liability at the end of games with a small lead.

There’s no question that he needs to improve his free throw shooting, but “big liability” -even at the end of close games - is a little harsh, given his FG% and his outstanding rebounding, and his shooting touch around the basket (which is something that Okpara probably dreams about).

Yes indeed, easy to throw rocks at Rohosy's FT shootijg and Okpara's seemingly senseless drives to the basket, but their 40 points were important plus their effort. It looks like Rohosy has been working on his FT shooting. Hope it continues to improve. 50 percent would be a good goal.

No one has accused me of being the most observant person, but is this the first game with Dent-Smith wearing mismatched shoes? Anybody know the story behind that?
Also, cool to hear Stanford WBBer Shay Ijiwoye doing some sideline reporting.

No comments on the actual game? Stanford started out on fire, up 21-7, but since then we haven’t really built upon that lead. We were up 40-25 at the half, and it’s 66-53 with about 2 minutes left. Four guys in double figures for us.

I was at Maples. Final exams ended last week, so no LSJUMB, no students and not a ton of others. Outcome never really in doubt despite a sluggish second half. UTA players were underweight, they looked like HS kids.
The second half was not scintillating for either team other than for the UTA press, which led to two or three 10 second violations by LSJU and some errant passes, after one of the TOs Coach Kyle was visibly upset at Benny and JDS, gesticulating and screaming.
Rohosy did convert 2 late FTs after missing a pair a few minutes earlier. UTA twice missed the front end on a pair of FTs in the second half, which drew the loudest cheers of the night as everyone was hoping for the free ShakeShack burger. Alas both times the UTA players did make the second FT, and so we got bupkis/no burgers.

Good enough performance against an offensively challenged team. We don't defend the 3 very well, but UTA doesn't take many and hits even fewer. So this was a good matchup for us.
Good news: Unless I misheard, the announcers said they expect Okorie back against Colorado.
Bad news: Colorado is one of the best 3-point shooting teams in the country.

They also said that Young is practicing with the team and should be back soon.
