MBB Halftime: Stanford 29 WSU 27 -

Hard to say anything of substance because the site I'm watching it on has stuttering video, but Aaron Bright--I love you, man, but maybe try toning down on the pull-up 3s?
Also, to Coach Dawkins: maybe try not putting Jarrett Mann and Josh Huestis on the floor at the same time?

Stanford went up by 12, and is now behind by 6. Besides the typical "young team" stuff, there are a few problems:
1) Stanford is unable to guard players in the post without fouling
2) Free throws
3) Johnny Dawkins waited farrrr too long to start calling timeouts to stop runs
4) Johnny Dawkins still believes it's OK to play Huestis and Mann at the same time. I might put my head through a wall if he continues this.
5) Come to think of it, I'm not sure why Mann ever gets minutes.

It is quite possible that the Pac-12 will only get one bid now. Cal lost its center, and Stanford's RPI is just too weak. The winner of the conference's championship in the big n' empty arena will probably be the only team to get in.
At this point the Pac-12 is clearly below several "mid-majors". The automatic winner placed as a 12 seed seems like a very strong possibility.Â

I wouldn't be surprised if, by Selection Sunday, the conference rep rebounds a bit and we get 2 teams in from the Pac-12. But I'm feeling worse and worse about us being one of them, unfortunately.

Well the Staples Center favors the LA teams. Their fans don't pack the house, and apparently are unwilling to drive an extra 5-10 miles down the road. But both teams get to enjoy the logistics benefits that come from playing near home. Thankfully, both LA teams are terrible.
The automatic invite seems likely to be given to the b.e.a.r.s, Stanford, Oregon or Arizona. Others probably could pull it out,but my guess is it goes to one of those 4. The other 3 will get NIT invites.

I could not see the game here in SoCal, but followed the second half online. So I could not see what WSU was doing defensively, but it looked like they must have been packing in the paint defensively, and we just started settling for 3-point shots. That's great when they fall (like the first 3 minutes of the second half), but few teams can just make a living on the outside like that. There was almost NO contributions from Josh Owens in the second half, after being a real force in the first.Â
I've been kind of neutral on Dawkins up to this point, giving him the benefit of the doubt due to what seems to be strong recruiting, and needing to give the young players a chance to develop. But in some ways, a lot of the responsibility for this loss falls on him, in my mind. You have to figure out a way to adjust when the defense stops what you've been having success with, and simply telling your young players "keep bombing away from the 3-point line isn't much of a strategy. I'm not enough of a basketball expert to say exactly what that response should be, but I didn't see evidence of any in-game adjustment at all, based purely on what I could gleen about shot selection and the flow of the game by watching it unfold online.
Maybe someone else got a look at the game and can tell me if I'm off base on this.

Well, I got a better stream in the second than the first, and I disagree with the take--the three point shots were typically though not always the result of moving the zone around, followed by an in-rhythm three point attempt. The shots were just missed. One sequence that was particularly memorable was--Randle misses an open corner three; offensive rebound, passes; Gage misses an open corner three; offensive missed rebound, missed two. Open corner threes are like the second-best shot in basketball; missing two--particularly when two accomplished shooters are taking them--is unfortunate. Sometimes the shots don't fall, offensively speaking.
I blame Dawkins for his poor use of timeouts and odd lineup management. At some point he really has to give up on Zimmerman and Mann. They just aren't good.
