I could not see the game here in SoCal, but followed the second half online. So I could not see what WSU was doing defensively, but it looked like they must have been packing in the paint defensively, and we just started settling for 3-point shots. That's great when they fall (like the first 3 minutes of the second half), but few teams can just make a living on the outside like that. There was almost NO contributions from Josh Owens in the second half, after being a real force in the first.Â
I've been kind of neutral on Dawkins up to this point, giving him the benefit of the doubt due to what seems to be strong recruiting, and needing to give the young players a chance to develop. But in some ways, a lot of the responsibility for this loss falls on him, in my mind. You have to figure out a way to adjust when the defense stops what you've been having success with, and simply telling your young players "keep bombing away from the 3-point line isn't much of a strategy. I'm not enough of a basketball expert to say exactly what that response should be, but I didn't see evidence of any in-game adjustment at all, based purely on what I could gleen about shot selection and the flow of the game by watching it unfold online.
Maybe someone else got a look at the game and can tell me if I'm off base on this.
