Kal loses 31 to 24 to Nevada - pcgoode - 09-01-2012

Cal looked pretty sloppy. Nevada quarterback looked good.

I feel better now  ;D

Re: Kal loses 31 to 24 to Nevada - Bruce Wang - 09-01-2012

Normally I cheer for them outside of Big Game.  The what's got for the rest of the conference is good for Stanford postulate (though I make an exception for U$C).

This is a special year.  I get to cheer against Kal twice.  My other alma mater is going to crush them in two weeks.  Urban Meyer is going to embarass Tedford - if he isn't fired for losing to Southern Utah.

I root against the weenies every game.

Re: Kal loses 31 to 24 to Nevada - Farm93 - 09-01-2012

If I really thought that Stanford's BCS bowl chances were at stake I would cheer for UCB.  That does not seem to be a reason to cheer for UCB this year.

Normally, I hope they do well OOC, for the honor of the conference, and that laugh it up when they stumble.

After so much hype about the benefit of playing in Memorial, I can't imagine what is happening over in bearbacker land.  Ole Jeff's seat must be on FIRE right now.

I can't imagine the PSL spots they will have NOW in Memorial.  Hey fans, get in now because when UCB starts winning it might be too late to get your PSLs.  The winning may not happen this year, but it is coming.  So please get your PSL today.

I have usually wished kal ill every week. But somehow this Nevada opening day thing is just too sad. Reading the bear fans' comments on sfgate, I don't wish that on them. Must be my cough medication.

The worry I have is that T.edford gets hired and Barbour lucks into/hires a good coach. Barbour has a lot of flaws but she was smart enough to hire Montgomery...What happens if, say, Pete Carroll is available after this year? I don't think they'd be able to swing a total coup from another biggish school like Chris Petersen, but still.

The thing is, kal fans aren't wrong when they say there's a lot of talent on that team. Their freshmen wideouts looked quite good. The d-line is still amped off of Lupoi's strong recruiting. There's talent there. If Kline's as good as they say, a good coach could turn that situation around quite quickly.

Re: Kal loses 31 to 24 to Nevada - 71Bear - 09-01-2012

Neither of the Bay Area's big time colleges covered themselves with glory this weekend.  However, at least LSJU won their game.

I think that game revealed why I think Shaw is more of a Lambright than an Osborne.  For example,  his challenge was misguided at best and stupid at worst.  In the long run, I'm afraid that he will disappoint you guys.

On the other side of the Bay, little has changed since last year.  My Alma Mater looked totally unprepared to play.  The foolish mistakes like substitution screw-ups and horrible play calling continue to plague the team.  JT is rapidly approaching "Gilby" status.

The last thing you want to do at the college level is piss off the major donors, especially at a program that is in deep financial trouble.  I'm afraid JT has done that........

Re: What was the deal with Maynard sitting early? - unclechuck - 09-02-2012

71 Bear - not starting Maynard may have been a pyrrhic moral victory for T.edford. Waz up?

Neuheisel pointed out in pregame show that Pendergast had trouble with Nevada's pistol (with Kapernick) and UCLA's in 2011 (almost 300 yds rushing). Another spot on call by Slick Rick.

Re: Kal loses 31 to 24 to Nevada - washingtonismoney - 09-02-2012

Slick Rick may have found his true calling as a studio analyst. He's pretty good.

Agree. He's been UCLA loyal, but understated about it, and head & shoulders better than the ex bare WR and the ex AZ o-lineman. Informed, insightful and balanced so far. Even gracious - in the first preview show when the anchor / moderator asked Rick how hot the seat was for Mike Kelly @ OSU, Rick just smoothy rolled into "well, Mike Riley has done a lot of good work for OSU and ...". Very professional.

Not starting Maynard for academic reasons was not the issue.  In fact, it was the right decision.  After all, the last time I checked intercollegiate football is an extracurricular activity.  If you don't do your homework, you can't play after school.

The issue was the complete lack of preparation exhibited by the team.  I suspect that part of this was due to JT not telling the team until Thursday/Friday that Maynard wouldn't start, even though that decision was made in June.  Why didn't he handle things differently (i.e., tell the team during the summer so they would have ample opportunity to get ready), I don't know.

Of course, the fact is that my Alma Mater lacks talent.  There is no team speed, little depth and FCS level players at several key positions (ILB and OL).  I was not expecting much this year but I did expect to see a team with some heart.  Sadly, that is lacking as well......

At this point, either the team gets it's stuff together quickly or the season will go south in a hurry.  Of course, that would mean that Chris Petersen would be heading to the Bay Area. Right?  ;)

Chris Petersen - JohnR34231 - 09-02-2012

It seems like he has turned down overtures from just about every Pac-12 school. I know he's from the Bay Area, but not sure what would tempt him about Kal.

JPRI... - 71Bear - 09-02-2012

I agree (hence, the emoticon)...

Re: Maynard - unclechuck - 09-02-2012

71Bear - thanks for the clarification. The timing & cause of suspension was unclear. It did seem poorly handled.

I'm not convinced C.al's talent pool is as shallow as you seem to feel. A lot of guys highly ranked out of HS that other Pac12 programs (OR, WA, UCLA, AZs) offered.

I don't follow your folks that closely, but I'm leaning towards coaching/development as a core issue.

Maybe Jeff was just sandbagging to put tOSU off the track. I'd be OK with that.

Re: Kal loses 31 to 24 to Nevada - StannyBoy - 09-02-2012

Cal has tons of talent on D. Maybe Fortt isn't playing yet but he'll be good. They do have a few LBs injured though but plenty of depth. I did read they are down to 3 CBs which is insane and worse than NDs secondary depth. They'll improve on this game just as we will improve on our past game. But I do think Maynard is a mediocre QB. They better hope Kline is the real deal next year.

Murder...on campus.

71 Bear is just flirting with us. He actually DOES care about Kal athletics - Redrum - 09-02-2012

Sandy Baby...er, Barbour didn't hire the UC system's highest paid employee,  but she did give him the contract extension that is literally and figuratively MAD...Mutual Assured Destruction.  71 Bear might know the story more clearly,  but on Bear Insider the figure bandied about is at least $6.5 million to make JT go away.  $6.5 million.  Why, you could buy a private port-potty for every Memorial Stadium game attendee for that.

So, do you fire SB and JT as a package deal and let Barbour's successor pick the new coach?  OR  Do you let Barbour deal with her own mess by forcing her to fire JT  (and then force her out )?  OR  Do nothing for years because so much money would have to change hands the mobs, faculty and exhausted donors would storm the palace?

Each option has major drawbacks:  Option 1:  you are betting you can make two near-simultaneous home-run critical hires.  Option 2:  If your boss were just about to put you on an ice flow and shove you out to sea,  how much care would you put into your final act?  Option 3:  $6.5 million is just the ante to play.  As many have pointed out,  the blowback from a continuing downward spiral at a time of financial peril for the athletic dept. would be acceptable.  Translated;  $6.5 million is cheap when compared to the agony and jeopardy  and lost revenue of sticking w/  a failing JT and hoping things get better.  Of course, if he were fired / forced out  instead of supporters storming the palace, maybe wallets would spring open on the theory that it's more than worth it.

Re: Kal loses 31 to 24 to Nevada - washingtonismoney - 09-02-2012

59er supporters are already starting the coach wishlist. Chris Petersen, of course, but bares have always been known for their delusion. They've finally gotten to Greg Roman and James Franklin...both of which would displease me. Not sure Franklin's gettable, but Roman would presumably be.

Greg Roman... - Redrum - 09-02-2012

he and Michigan's Brady Hoke could start a sumo wrestling league.  But...IIRC,  Roman did show interest in the Stanford HC job before joining Harbaugh w/ the Niners.    I wonder if he would consider a collegiate HC job as a step down.  A lot of NFL purists would.  Maybe he's not an NFL purist.
