Not starting Maynard for academic reasons was not the issue. In fact, it was the right decision. After all, the last time I checked intercollegiate football is an extracurricular activity. If you don't do your homework, you can't play after school.
The issue was the complete lack of preparation exhibited by the team. I suspect that part of this was due to JT not telling the team until Thursday/Friday that Maynard wouldn't start, even though that decision was made in June. Why didn't he handle things differently (i.e., tell the team during the summer so they would have ample opportunity to get ready), I don't know.
Of course, the fact is that my Alma Mater lacks talent. There is no team speed, little depth and FCS level players at several key positions (ILB and OL). I was not expecting much this year but I did expect to see a team with some heart. Sadly, that is lacking as well......
At this point, either the team gets it's stuff together quickly or the season will go south in a hurry. Of course, that would mean that Chris Petersen would be heading to the Bay Area. Right? ;)
