It's pretty fascinating that Yankey was an all-american at his position (LT) and is being asked to move over for one of the young bucks. I wonder how that plays out on team chemistry.

My read is that, while Yankey is apparently a great LT, he's an even better LG. Last year we had a suitable replacement for him at LG, but no solution at all at LT, so the line as a whole was better with him there. This year one of the 5* studs from '12 will be able to fill in at LT, so the line as a whole is better with him back at his "natural" position of LG.

Provided that's the case (and I don't see why Shaw would be lying about it) it seems like team chemistry wouldn't be an issue at all.

I doubt Yankey is upset by the move back to guard.  Shaw is basically touting him as the next great pulling guard a la David DeCastro.

Doesn't Yankey project as a guard in the NFL?  He probably doesn't mind the opportunity to shore up his pro prospects.

Well, tackles do make much more than guards in the NFL, and I'm not sure who is necessarily projecting him to be an NFL OG...at 6-5, he's certainly tall enough to play the position in the NFL, even if 6-7 may be more prototypical.

It's a selfless move...and probably for the best of the team.

if he has long arms then yes he's tall enough to play OT in the NFL. If he has short arms then he's better off on playing OG in college since that would be his pro position.

I'm much more worried about the TEs than the WRs.  The WRs have been unproductive, so there's upside and lots of potential for improvement with the talent on the roster.  The TEs, on the other hand, have been a cornerstone of the offense during the entire Stanford Football Renaissance.  Plus the TE coach is new.

This could be a reason to be less concerned about the TEs.  Smart coaches (and I assume DS to be one) use the best personnel they have and build their schemes around said personnel.  If the WRs truly are better in 2013 than in recent years, the TEs won't be emphasized in the offense quite as much as has been the case recently, but it won't be a bad thing.

I would love to see Devon Cajuste, at his size, play the role of Ed McCaffrey, Justin Armour, Evan Moore or Mark Harris--all great route runners who seemed to be able to get open at will and be the QB's best friend (although one unimaginative coach, who could apparently only see Moore's height decided to start throwing nothing but fades to him).

I believe that this is the case, that we were so reliant on our TEs because they were talented and our receivers were somewhere between serviceable and bad. If that situation reverses itself this year then we'll be fine, we'll just do more passing to receivers and only use TEs situationally. Alternatively, if we can get good production out of one or two guys in each position, then a big drop, we'll still be okay. We just need SOMEONE to be good at getting separation and catching the ball.

The scary thing is that we have no proven talent there, where in the past we had our TEs. Add in no Stepfan and our offense needs to be almost entirely rebuilt. But a great OL and good QB do wonders toward restoring confidence, I think we'll be okay.

Durham Smythe, one of the TEs we tried to recruit, said the Cardinal coaches frankly told him that TEs were used prominently in the passing game because they were better receivers than the WRs.

Yeah, that is not good.  Hands are the most underrated part of WRs.  That is what made someone like, say, Ryan Whalen so good.

Zach Ertz had great hands as well.

Not that this was ever in doubt, but we should now know there is a totally open competition for the receiver's spots.  Who is going to get playing time during the season?  Anyone who can catch the damn ball!
