Harbaugh watch .... File your links here - Leftcoast - 11-23-2010

Tim Kawakami leads off .....  Basically states the York\'s would be fools to not have Harbaugh #1 on their list to replace his old teammate but wonders if he\'s too hot of a prospect to consider SF.

Now, am I the only one who wonders if Harbaugh really wants to be seen as the guy who kicked his old Chicago teammate out the door?   That might make Chicago Bear alumni reunions a bit testy - especially if the 49ers initiate contact with Jim BEFORE firing Singletary.

I\'m sticking to my very stubborn faith that JH will stay and build a Stanford dynasty.  Long may he reign!

Bay Area sportswriters keep writing the same story over and over again -- "Harbaugh\'s leaving" or "how long until Harbaugh leaves" or "Harbaugh should leave." Every once in a while, they get bored and write a "Luck\'s leaving" story just for fun. They don\'t seem to be able to find any other newsworthy stories in this wonderful Stanford season -- just "Harbaugh\'s outta here." They couldn\'t do a better job of tamping down enthusiasm if they were trying. Then, they turn around and complain that fans aren\'t getting excited about Stanford football. . .

Re: Harbaugh watch .... File your links here - fullmetal - 11-23-2010

I think the writers just want Stanford football to fade into irrelevance again.  They appear to not like writing about Stanford football success...

Re: Harbaugh watch .... File your links here - Pastor - 11-23-2010

I\'m with FM but I go bolder...both Harbaugh and Luck will be back next year and we will be in the BCS top 4 (because we will, unlike this year, be ranked to start the season...and you know what that does to the human polls).

Re: Harbaugh watch .... File your links here - washingtonismoney - 11-23-2010

To add to the mindless speculation: Ted Miller floated an interesting possibility should Harbaugh leave--Mike Belloti. Certainly would be a change in admissions stringency, that\'s for sure.

Re: Harbaugh watch .... File your links here - fullmetal - 11-23-2010

Pastor, Luck has to be the Voldemort winner next year if he comes back.  I almost want him to go as the #1 draft pick this year if he can get the #1 slot.  There\'s a lot of prestige that the program can accrue from that, and the old adage of tomorrow never being guaranteed to anyone still holds true.  It should help in recruiting too, if Stanford is a place where NFL dreams are taken seriously.

If next year\'s defense is as good as this year\'s defense, then I\'ll feel a lot better about Stanford\'s chances of winning a national title.  Also, this is contingent on our bowl result and no injuries.  Whalen and Baldwin are seniors and will need to find understudies.  (Did anyone see similarities between Baldwin\'s TD grab last week and Mark Bradford\'s TD grab to beat USC from two years ago?)

This Thanksgiving I\'m thankful for the Stanford football team staying relatively injury-free.

We really have to wait on the lockout for this one. Several writers have very correctly speculated that there are at least 5 former NFL HCs with Super Bowl rings waiting in the wings, and that a potential lockout following this NFL season would dissuade owners from making expensive HC hires when a) a season might not be played, or b) when those new HCs wouldn\'t have nearly as much practice time with their players if it does happen. Much better to promote from within, which is both cheaper and ensures continuity. Or go with an old NFL hand that has past success.

The lockout could go either way with Luck. On the one hand, it\'s possible rookie salaries may be lowered in a new CBA, encouraging him to come out earlier. OTOH, it is highly unlikely a new CBA will be in place before the time underclassmen have to declare for the draft, and there will be a significant amount of uncertainty with the decision to leave. Stanford for another year or two is certainly not a bad way to while away some time.

I think they both come back next year. Harbaugh is pretty much impossible to read, but despite his endless ambition I think his style is more suited to the college game. I think he enjoys working with intelligent student athletes who appreciate his Ralph Waldo Emerson digressions. The NFL is a far more conservative and straight laced institution and I don\'t think he would find the same personal satisfaction working as a technician rather than a leader and teacher of young men. If we can pony up a salary that is market competitive, I think he could stay for some time. Of course much of what I said applied to PC as well, but I don\'t think the NCAA is about to bring the hammer down on Stanford this spring.

With Luck, he\'s a bright guy who comes from an educated and well off family. He doesn\'t need the money right now. Elway has already told him to value his undergraduate time. The past few years we\'ve seen several other P10 QBs face this decision and spurn millions of dollars to come back to enjoy their college years. Locker and Leinhart both were potential #1 overall guys, and decided to come back. It probably cost them both a lot of money, but Luck is undoubtedly a better prospect than either of them, and another year won\'t expose any flaws in his game.

Most likely scenario in my mind, they\'re both back for next season, Stanford is a top 5 BCS team, with Luck the leading Voldemort candidate.

Peter King just said on PTI he suspects Leslie Frazier and Jason Garrett will stick with their respective jobs. (they\'re the interim coaches for Minnesota and Dallas, respectively.)

Re: Harbaugh watch .... File your links here - yvonne - 11-23-2010

I read a blog this morning quoting Harbaugh as saying his goal was to win multiple championships at Stanford. I don\'t recall the date of the blog, but Harbaugh cited Ralston as his example.

Furthermore, just this month, I read a news article quoting Harbaugh as saying he was not satisfied at being 9-1 at the time, but that he wanted to be 10-0, and that we hadn\'t accomplished anything yet.

Kawakami is just another example of the press or others thinking Harbaugh is ridiculous, and that Stanford isn\'t good enough to be a football power. First, they laughed when he said "We bow to no program," and we beat a No. 1 USC. Then, they laughed when he said a bowl wasn\'t good enough, that he wanted to not merely maintain momentum from last year, that he wanted to compete for the national championship. Now, they\'re laughing saying that he\'ll leave because all the other coaches do.

Guess what? Harbaugh has backed up everything he\'s said to date, and I have no reason to believe he won\'t again here.

I CALL BULLSHIT!

Re: Harbaugh watch .... File your links here - readarmy1976 - 11-24-2010

I honestly think Harbaugh will stay at Stanford. He\'s a unique guy, and after all he\'s said about the character of his Stanford players, it\'s hard to imagine him leaving for a football factory, even michigan.

On the pay front, I bet Stanford will be able to pay him competitively when the new TV deal is in place. Some NFL coaches only make 2 mil a year. Plus, he\'s put so much time and energy into building his program, I doubt he would just leave that and start over.

On the downside, I think the lack of a rabid fan base truly bothers him.

He\'s not chasing fame like most coaches. He already got the fame and the money as a player. How come none of these "journalists" talk about this stuff? Nothing but envy. They all wish they went to Stanford.

Re: Harbaugh watch .... File your links here - Leftcoast - 11-25-2010

I wouldn\'t call him envious but I guess the normally steady Kirk Herbstreit is among those who can\'t see Stanford keeping a good coach .... he\'s touting Harbaugh for Michigan should Rich Rod leave and has some strong words about our crowds as well.

Quote:"If that does not happen (Harbaugh to Michigan) then I\'ve got to believe … I\'ve called Stanford games this year, and as good as they are, they don\'t fill up their stadium," Herbstreit said. "It\'s really sad to see the apathy. They just don\'t appreciate what they have.

What game did he call?  USC?  I think we were pretty full for that one.

And Kirk ... many of us DO appreciate what we\'ve got.  The crowds will build, particularly if our Coach stays.  This is the sort of year that sells Season Tix and folks that get them KEEP them.

Re: Harbaugh watch .... File your links here - CrazedZooChimp - 11-25-2010

I think he called the Arizona game, and it was sad that wasn\'t full.  I think the students should be moved back to the Sunny Side, it\'ll make the Stadium louder and look more full.

But, I agree, this is the type of season that creates season ticket holders.  Heck I imagine that the graduating classes of the last couple years will keep coming to games, rather than forgetting about Stanford football like graduates did for the previous 8 years.

Re: Harbaugh watch .... File your links here - jacketree - 11-25-2010

Michigan plays THE Ohio State University and they will probably lose.  (Go Blue for at least two reasons this year.)

If Stanford can\'t draw crowds for non-USC or non-Big Games this year, with this team, when will they?
