We really have to wait on the lockout for this one. Several writers have very correctly speculated that there are at least 5 former NFL HCs with Super Bowl rings waiting in the wings, and that a potential lockout following this NFL season would dissuade owners from making expensive HC hires when a) a season might not be played, or b) when those new HCs wouldn\'t have nearly as much practice time with their players if it does happen. Much better to promote from within, which is both cheaper and ensures continuity. Or go with an old NFL hand that has past success.
The lockout could go either way with Luck. On the one hand, it\'s possible rookie salaries may be lowered in a new CBA, encouraging him to come out earlier. OTOH, it is highly unlikely a new CBA will be in place before the time underclassmen have to declare for the draft, and there will be a significant amount of uncertainty with the decision to leave. Stanford for another year or two is certainly not a bad way to while away some time.
I think they both come back next year. Harbaugh is pretty much impossible to read, but despite his endless ambition I think his style is more suited to the college game. I think he enjoys working with intelligent student athletes who appreciate his Ralph Waldo Emerson digressions. The NFL is a far more conservative and straight laced institution and I don\'t think he would find the same personal satisfaction working as a technician rather than a leader and teacher of young men. If we can pony up a salary that is market competitive, I think he could stay for some time. Of course much of what I said applied to PC as well, but I don\'t think the NCAA is about to bring the hammer down on Stanford this spring.
With Luck, he\'s a bright guy who comes from an educated and well off family. He doesn\'t need the money right now. Elway has already told him to value his undergraduate time. The past few years we\'ve seen several other P10 QBs face this decision and spurn millions of dollars to come back to enjoy their college years. Locker and Leinhart both were potential #1 overall guys, and decided to come back. It probably cost them both a lot of money, but Luck is undoubtedly a better prospect than either of them, and another year won\'t expose any flaws in his game.
Most likely scenario in my mind, they\'re both back for next season, Stanford is a top 5 BCS team, with Luck the leading Voldemort candidate.
