My memory is that the former was more spectacular, but it could be either my own age or the fact that the game was much more dramatic.

Have to say I find kickoffs somewhat cheap-yards in these calculations - or at least should really be counted vs. the touchback position. [i.e. if you return 5 kickoffs from the endzone to the 20 yard line you get 100 all purpose yards, but you have actually cost your team 25 yards versus taking a knee.]

An interesting contrast with Toby is that TG was the go to guy for short yardage situations while McCaf is subbed out in those situations. I think that he's more explosive on the margins, but it also feels like he's running through bigger holes. Is there a source for yards after contact that we could compare the two on?

Part of me will be a bit disappointed if/when he breaks Toby's record.

Here are a couple other items I'd like to add to this discussion:
(1) Barry Sanders scored 37 TDs during his 3,250 all-purpose yards season (and as mentioned by others, in 11 games) - the TDs are not material to the all-purpose record but still an amazing stat worth sharing; and
(2) not to let facts get in the way of a good Stanford narrative, but in the Voldemort conversation (as opposed to all-purpose yards conversation) being interwoven into this thread by some, TDs are also relevant and McCaffrey has relatively few (11 total including 7 rushing TDs, Fournette has 17, Henry 21) - yes, we all know that Wright is our short yardage/goal line guy.
