PS, I wonder if Webb regrets decomitting from Colorado.
Actually, the one bright spot for Oregon this year was the rather miraculous emergence of Justin Herbert at QB. The kid was a true freshman out of Eugene who was basically unrecruited - I see 247 lists offers from UO, Montana State, Portland State and Northern Arizona. At the time I thought it was a help out the local kid kind of offer. He didn't even seem to be their main QB recruit - that would be a guy named Wilson out of Oklahoma. He also wasn't an early entry - not showing up until the summer/fall camp. But he displaced this year's Oregon transfer QB in game #6 and then played very well, especially for a true frosh.
He completed 64% of his passes at 7.6 yds/attempt with 19 TDs, 4 INTs, and PER=149.
For comparison, last year's notable true frosh QBs (who I think made their respective spring camps) were,
Browning, completed 63% of passes at 8.0 yds/attempt with 16 TDs, 10 INTs, and PER=139.
Rosen, completed 60% of passes at 7.5 yds/attempt with 23 TD, 11 INTs, and PER=134.
People missed it with Oregon's struggles overall, but Herbert was rather amazing. However, that appears to be pure blind luck in saving them from the issues of development that might be encapsulated by relying upon transfers. May Cal see no such luck in their future.
