The worry with Kelly isn't that he wins year one, or even year two, but that his name can draw in recruits and that he can scheme his way to a few upsets and build momentum. With Dykes they were going nowhere, but with Kelly you could see that changing over time.

The problem, of course, is that there's no reason to think Kelly wants to be there for one year, let alone multiple.

Ironically it's his vendetta against the York family that has made him one of the more credible writers covering the team over the past 12-24 months. With Barrows and Maiocco it's a lot of "Nothing to see here, everything's fine."

I disagree.  What Differentiated Chip Kelly from Mark Helfrich is that Kelly could field a competent defense.  The Ducks' offense was ok this year, but what doomed them was their utter lack of a defense.

Chip Kelly's Oregon defenses weren't Alabama-style lockdown ones, but they could be tough when they had to be. Ask Andrew Luck about how they performed in the second halves of 2010 and 2011.

Did Stanford have a similar miss during the Harris or Teevens hires?  I don't remember any of the passed over candidates bathed in later glory.
