I saw him play on May 28, 1978--my very first professional sports game I ever attended, with the Dodgers against the Giants at Candlestick. I wasn't knowledgeable about baseball, but when I heard his name I recognized it and was surprised that he was still playing. I remember thinking "someday I will be able to say I saw Willie McCovey play." Well, old 81 to young 81: today is that day.
Sadly, he had a mediocre day, with no hits. The Giants called up a new pinch hitter, Mike Ivie, who proceeded to hit a grand slam to beat the Dodgers, and that overshadowed everything else. My seat was so bad that I couldn't see where the balls landed--every fly ball looked like it might be a home run when it disappeared out of my line of sight. But the crowd told me what I needed to know.

Sad day. Stretch was always so beloved. At Candlestick and PacBell, Mays was always the last introduced on important occasions, but the love for McCovey ran just a little deeper. McCovey was ours and the love seemed to be mutual. McCovey was always completely genuine and will truly be missed by Giants fans. Glad I got to see him give out the Willie Mac Award this year. The letter from Larry Baer to fans says that condolences can be sent to Forever44@sfgiants.com. Forever 44 indeed.

I never met him, but I saw him play golf many Sundays in the mid 80's at Half Moon Bay, with DimMaggio and the local pro (Moon Mullins). The three were royalty there and then.
If there is a heaven he will meet those other 2 soon and take Chuck Schultz along to make up a 4-ball......;

During my time with the Giants Mac was gracious and self effacing. He went through a hard time during the ‘60 season and was sent down for awhile. Did his work and came back a more complete player. He owned Drysdale.

One of my sports heroes - my favorite type of athlete. Quiet leadership. Did his job, didn't show off, it was never about him, just the team and the game. Maybe my favorite baseball player ever.
