It’s a battle to avoid last place in the PAC-12. I suppose there is some symbolic importance to that (and to beating rivals), but I think the evidence is already pretty overwhelming that the years 2019-2022 (perhaps excepting the weird COVID year) have been brutal for Stanford football, and that there is no sign to suggest that we are improving. In fact, I think the evidence suggests that November is a particularly bad month for Shaw since 2019, which to me tells me we are regressing as the season moves forward. To be honest, it is only Cal’s almost equally brutal offense that has me thinking this shouldn’t be a double-digit spread, but I would hardly be surprised if the final score is something like 20-3.
I don’t know of anyone who keeps track of the stat, but the number of three-and-outs that the offense has produced, especially the last few games, is brutal.
