We finally woke up, but too late. We won the 4th 24-14. 43 fouls were called in this game. We shot 24-31 from the charity stripe. This was an ugly game to watch. I wonder why Demetre didn't get back into the game at the end. She only played 7 minutes. I thought she was our go-to closer.
Put a glide in your stride and a dip in your hip.

My screen went black with "technical difficulties" before the end, but I gather that bad inbound pass with 5.8 left either led to a turnover or the clock running out. The online stats don't cover it. The ball was rolling on the floor when the feed went black for me.
It was great having two chances for a 3-pointer to tie at the end, after having been so far down. Great effort.

Does she have a hand injury? I saw something blue on her right hand.

kal drove the paint at will. Lay up after lay up gave them a big lead that we couldn't overcome.
What happened to Demetre? Bosgana didn't have her best game either. The refs were itching to blow their whistles on both teams tonight.

I was at the game and am mystified by an intentional foul called on Shay with 2:40 left. We had it to a 2 point game. Ogden was shooting free throws and made both cutting the lead to 2. The momentum was clearly on our side. But then the Cal player on the block went down on Ogden's 2nd shot and Ijiwoye fell on top of her. No foul was called. But the Cal player looked seriously hurt--she could not put weight on her knee as she was helped off the court. The refs decided to review the play. They called an intentional foul on Shay. This turned the game around.
1) It was Ijiwoye's 5th foul and she had been the spark that was leading our comeback.
2) Cal got two free throws, making them both and extending the lead.
3) Cal keeps the ball.
Here is my question: what is reviewable? The refs reviewed a play on which no foul had been initially called? I did not think they could do that.....but one way or the other it snuffed out our hopes.
Next question: what did Shay actually do? I did not see the play from the stands.
OK, I just watched the replay. Ijiwoye leaned in and ran sideways into Noble, knocking her to the floor. I think it is the sort of thing smaller players are taught to do--get leverage on the bigger player. But Noble fell over rather than pushed back.
The announcement was "the previous play is under review for contact."
What is the rule? Can plays with nothing called be reviewed whenever the refs think it would be a good idea? Is it only after an injury?

This time we defended the perimeter fairly well, holding them to 4/18. 4 is a lot less than 18. But the obvious counter was to drive past those perimeter players and score in the paint, which Cal did. Cal is simply a very talented and versatile team this year, and we found we could take away one dimension of their game but that they could then exploit the other.
What happened to Demetre? Bosgana didn't have her best game either. The refs were itching to blow their whistles on both teams tonight.
As for Demetre, I was wondering about her. She played only 7 minutes and did not score a point. At the end of the game when we needed a three point shot to get to overtime, she did not come into the game. No matter how badly she had played, she is the one player I would want in a desperation situation when we need a three. She must have been injured or she would have been in.
What I noticed the most about the game was the lack of assists. We had only 4 assists through 3 quarters, although we got a bunch more as we made our comeback at the end. But we could not pass the ball for a very long time. Running the Princeton without making passes is a formula for losing.
It was nice to see Alyssa Jerome and Fran Belibi at the game. I was half hoping that we could sneak them into jerseys, maybe along with Erica McCall, and bring them out to start the second half.

From memory: The rule in NCAA WBB is that an intentional or unsportsmanlike foul (i.e. what used to be called flagrant 1 or 2) can be called from video review even if no foul was called in real time, but a common foul can't be. It's at the officials' discretion when to do a review to check for such a suspected foul. In this game they also did such a review a few minutes earlier when Krimili was chasing Ijuwoye from behind on a breakaway and ran into Ijuwoye's elbow. They called it incidental contact, I believe correctly.
By the way, the NBA used to have a similar rule (common foul call can't originate from a review) but made changes to stop some obvious unfairness it could cause. My pet peeve (finally corrected in the NBA rules) has been when officials review an out of bounds call to see whether the ball last touched player A or B, and it becomes obvious on review that player A had possession, player B swung at the ball, missed, and whacked player A, causing A to lose the ball out of bounds. In this rather common case, the NCAA WBB rule requires the ball to be awarded to player B's team (possibly reversing the original call) if a review occurs, because the common foul that was missed in real time can't be called on review.
I suspect there may also be some temptation to call a foul intentional/flagrant on review because it can't be called common when it hadn't been called in real time. Hopefully only a very small temptation.

I was sad I couldn't be at the game and could only watch from home. I'm getting over a nasty stomach bug, probably norovirus. I feel much better today, but I might still be contagious, so I'm stuck at home a while longer.

The one thing we found out about these refs is how far out of the coaching box you have to be for the refs to T up a coach.

Coach Paye went with the better defenders in this game and I applaud her for that. Cal’s players drove at will against Bosgana and Demetre and it led to easy layup after easy layup. You can’t win games if your defense is that porous to a layup. Demetre does not have the quickness to stay in front of her player. I think Bosgana might but she got beat repeatedly as well.

Yes, Ogden, Clardy and Shay are stronger on D than Bosgana, Heal and Harriel (don't know if she was available). Ogden even made a three. Keep it up. Peterson has good positioning on D, but offense has a way to go.
Was impressed with the press D in the second half. Much improved and shows we definitely can get better.

Thanks. missed it.
Harriel was, at one point, our best three point shooter, and I thought her defense, while not elite, was probably as good or better than some of our other guards. Not having her in the mix is not a good sign. I wonder if the coaches have begun to reduce the playing time of our seniors in an effort to get others more experience, knowing that the best thing that can happen this season is getting ready for next season.

"Our team is in pain."
Paye brought Clardy and Ijiwoye. She immediately mentioned the intentional foul. "They call an intentional foul. I've watch it. I do not agree with the call at all. It was a game-changer."
"Good things are coming. There are no moral victories." Kate alluded to the fact that our team has had consistency issues all season, playing some good quarters but let-downs in others.

She was asked about Harriel and confirmed that she was healthy.

I give us credit for fighting our way back in, but when the game was on the line Kal had a little bit more in the tank than we did.
Oh well, at least the game was a lot closer than the first one. We do seem to be improving.
Nice to see the people who are presumably going to be around for the next couple of years getting a lot of action. That plus the excellent recruiting class bodes well for the future.

yes, better defenders. also, perhaps younger players. could be coincidence but demetre, bosgana, and harriel won't be here next year, so kate might be preparing next year's team.
it was interesting to watch kennedy umeh. i have seen so many big bodies post up against stanford and back their way to an easy bucket. when kennedy does the same, the defender leaps backwards into a sprawl and kennedy gets called for a charge. reminds me of the strategy of danielle adams against kayla pederson in texas a&m's 1 point victory over stanford in the 2011 NCAA semis iirc.

Just a side note about Harriel. During halftime when the other players were shooting around, she was on the bike. It may not mean anything, but she may be recovering from something.
