I think there's a perfectly good logical distinction to be made (though perhaps board software can't pick it up).

Bearz of the Golden variety are extinct (look it up!). Naming your team after them just shows your utter 59erness. Of course having an extinct animal as your mascot will doom you to futility.

Other b.ears are proud, intelligent animals.

Not sure where this is to be looked up but grizzlies (which come in lots of shades....from cinnamon to silvertip to red to "golden") are extinct in California but very much extant in Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, Alaska and a couple of Canadian provinces.

The previous taxonomy of the California grizzly is rather befitting.  Per the Wiki:

A friend of mine did an interesting radio story a little while back about Monarch, the grizzly that's memorialized on the California state flag. The story involves William Randolph Hearst, a San Francisco newspaper reporter who was sent bear-hunting in Ventura County, and Golden Gate Park.

"In 1924, a grizzly known to roam an area of the southern Sierras was spotted for the last time, and thereafter, grizzlies were never seen again in California."

Since this is about the last time they won the Rose Bowl, sounds like they picked the right mascot.
