Clearly all of the classic arguments about what an academic institution SHOULD be paying for sports coaches would apply.  However, even at $2 million, I believe that Coach Shaw is likely the lowest paid head coach with at least 3 BCS bowl game appearances.  Given the 2013 compensation for the middle tier in the SEC, I would guess Coach Shaw could easily get $4-5 million per year if he elected to go with the highest bidder.

Good Luck with that.  Harbaugh had a plan and a goal and Stanford was always a stepping stone.  I don't begrudge him at all.  He changed and set the tone and left us better than he found us, but his eye was always on the NFL and the Super Bowl.

I thought it worked perfectly.  Harbaugh turns around the program, but is clearly headed to the pros.  Some personal attributes that are possibly suboptimal for a long-term college coach.  Shaw learns from Harbaugh (and others) over the years and was very clearly ready to not just take on the program, but shepherd it for a very, very long time.  Perfect succession planning, really the kind you dream about.

Didn't matter what we offered Harbaugh.  Unlike Shaw, he had no real Stanford ties, and it was clear after his first season that Stanford was merely a stepping stone to an NFL head coaching job.

Good for him, IMHO, but it is irrelevant to the point of my comment.  More importantly, are we sliding down a slippery slope to being a University which rewards bread and circuses more than thought and intelligence.  I hope not but I am not yet convinced that this is the case.

For example, at UCB, the fans like to remind us that Tedford's salary mostly came from outside doners and sponsors. Is that so different from Hennessy's wealth being funded mostly from outside sponsors who are in part paying for access to the university?

[/quote]I'm comfortable with Stanford rewarding academics, athletics, and the arts.  I don't think those rewards show skewed priorities if they are in the normal range of the market for those services/products.  I would be concerned if funding for athletics or the arts drained funds from the core academic mission, but I don't see any evidence of that.  Your question is a fair question to ask but is not so important that it can't be subject to a little friendly teasing.  ;)
