Winston is trying to go back in time to recreate the moment he decided that Stanford academics were too intimidating and while in Palo Alto he had sensed a vague disturbance in the force that maybe the Boys-will-be-boys ethic might be weakening on Stanford's campus.  Also, as a serious student of science, he wanted to test the theory that if he had surrounded himself with students and teammates of Stanford caliber,  he never would have rap...er, had consensual sex with that girl and certainly would have purchased those crab legs rather than try to shoplift them.
