That is part of the confusion I usually see at this point in each recruiting class.
I think a lot of recruits claim interest in Stanford because they get approving nods and people decide they are good students.
Applying requires taking APs, multiple attempts at standardized tests, sweating out your grades, dealing with the application, etc. That is a lot harder than saying you want to go to an academic school and that your parents put academics first.
I find myself looking for a few key phrases that show the recruit has actually talked to someone on the staff about trying to get into school: early enrollment(no), taking APs(yes), anything about the application(yes).
This year looks very promising so far.
