I won't pretend to say that the LSJUMB didn't deserve some kind of punishment for their off-campus practices. WAY back in the day, the band had zero social rituals or traditions . . . well, other than beer and doughnuts ("the breakfast of champions") on game days (and a few guys took a particular interest in whippets). The road trips were just like any other roadie by college-aged kids. Partying and fun? Absolutely. Hazing or questionnaires? Please.
BUT, I will say that Stanford teams and fans - especially those attending non-home events - may start to appreciate just how supportive the LSJUMB is to Stanford student athletics. As I've said many times before, there is no group on campus more supportive of Stanford sports than the members of the band. They show up for football and men's basketball (of course), but they are there for countless other non-revenue sports, and THAT TAKES A LOT OF TIME AND ATTENTION. And that doesn't even include off-campus 'rallies" or charity/cause appearances. None of the good stuff gets any run; only the bad. It pisses me off a bit, but that's the world we live in.
And if Stanford ever imposes a "traditional band" on campus - as some here would like to see - then you will see a great Vanishing Act. All the sudden, the #1 support group for Stanford athletics will be gone. And people will wonder how/why that happened . . .
P.S. My gut is with Stymie on this one, but again, I don't know any of the facts (it does bother me that there evidently was some BS questionnaires that were sexually inappropriate).
P.P.S. There was one "tradition" I heard about - showing some porn flick early in the fall (of course there were porn flicks shown campus-wide at that time . . . can you imagine?). Anyway, that "tradition" was ended my frosh year when members of the band ripped the film off the spool and shredded it because the scenes were so bad.
