Another former band member chiming in.Â
Hazing and sexual harassment is unacceptable in any setting, and Stanford rightly needs to crack down on that type of behavior.Â
I do not, however, agree with the characterization that such conduct from the band is unsurprising or even an inevitable result of the silly, irreverent, or immature behavior people see in public. The students who participate in the band learn a lot about running an organization that helps them make major contributions to society when they graduate, notwithstanding the fact that they drink alcohol and behave immaturely sometimes while they are in college. Stanford rightly takes a laissez faire approach with the band most of the time, just like the approach that Stanford takes with all the other student-run organizations that provide opportunities for students to become independent adults. I would not want to see Stanford become a babysitter for the band or any other student-run organization.Â
