My understanding is that Nike is behind several schools recently moving to meaner looking mascots that are more sparsely drawn.
One example is UConn, which went from a cuddly, friendly husky dog to a mean, spare look. The official story was that it was more mobile-browser-friendly. The unofficial story was that somebody at Nike decided they could sell more merchandise with the new look. The other unofficial story is that somehow Nike conned UConn to paying them a large consulting fee for coming up with the new logo.Â
I think I see a similarity to the c.a.l. evolution.
