I'm not entirely sure what their methodology was, but the article includes the most commonly searched spellings of words in each state. (I am guessing they looked analyzed for how often people searched for the term "how do you spell XXXX" by state. It's also interesting what the search autocomplete suggests when you type "how do you spell" in the search box (for me the choices were "cancelled", "40", "grey", "Mississippi" and, "Resume"). Looks like a lot of states struggle with grey/gray, perhaps because both are acceptable spellings.
