And "grey" is not acceptable in American English. On this side of the pond, it's "gray."
Strangely, it turns out that great arbiter of language and spelling, Microsoft Word, complains to me that gray is a misspelling but is perfectly fine with grey. [I checked, I am set to English (US).]
I am assuming that by "this side of the pond" you are referring to Lake Superior, as grey is the more common form in Canada.
