The first athlete's name that comes to me is Earl "The Pearl" Monroe. I wanted to be a Globertrotter, and Earl proved you could be one and still play in the NBA.
I liked Champagne Tony Lema, too. Maybe nicknames help.
And Ken "Hawk" Harrelson, which may prove it. Love his threads, and Doug Sanders', too.
I may have posted before that I was at the party that Pre attended the night he died. He was compelling, the most alive person I've ever met.
Sherman was my favorite Stanford football player ever, even before he turned pro. Didn't pass through the nickname screen, of course, but that may show how special he was. Same with Lenny Moore. Not sure he'd have made this list if he hadn't sported spats, a clue that athlete's wardrobes influenced whom I chose as a favorite. But Walter "Clyde" Frazier has both the nickname and the closets stuffed with cool stuff, and he was just ok with me.
