Following only peripherally, and it's not really my specialty. Every few months I do look on pubmed for anything new.
But yes, the stuff that I've seen has all been low numbers with extremely questionable patient populations that have a lot of confounding factors, and retrospective (obviously). Also, it's important to note that as of now, the pathological signs they are seeing, we don't really know how they relate to actual symptoms.
I don't think we'll have really good science for decades. That would probably require us to prospectively follow cohorts of players for many years, with reliable knowledge of their concussion history.
