The thing is with this statement from the athletic department is that while I want the football players to be academic successes, they aren't charging a pretty hefty fee for me to go watch these guys sit in a classroom. They ARE charging a hefty fee for me to sit in a stadium and watch them play football. If the administration isn't going to put a reasonable effort to have success on the football field, why should I pay to watch it? There are 30K really excellent scholars at Cal, most of whom are more qualified academically than the football players. I don't want to pay to watch them play football either or quidditch or beer pong or anything else.

Would the administration say "Here is the university orchestra. They can't play a note, but they get good grades. They'll be followed by the university ballet who has trouble staying on their feet, but really smart kids. That'll be $100 please."?
