My mother was a first generation Italian. Her people endured all kinds of ridicule and marginalization. They spoke Italian in the home, but never had the audacity to do anything other than learn how to speak English outside of it. There wasn't any ESL class in school, there weren't Italian instructions at banks. They didn't ask for, get, or expect any special treatment. They learned how to assimilate into the predominant American culture, worked their asses off, and earned respect by doing so.
That prejudice against Italians was less virulent than that against blacks proves... what, exactly?
