Speaking of athletics budgets, the Washington Post had a very in depth article about the effect of increased money (from television) on the budgets of athletics departments.

The short version is that more money coming in has led to more spending. I know, how surprising. Maryland went from a $42 million in revenues in 2004 to a $55 million in revenues 10 years later, running a deficit of $17.6 million (looks like they are using the same numbers as USA Today). They don't show the deficit in 2004, but the revenue/spending lines diverge, so the deficit has been widening.
