Thanks Hank, great write-up, as usual. As for the rivalry, I think it's a bit asymmetric. I think we dislike Notre Dame more than they dislike us (though I at least don't resent Notre Dame fans for not hating on Stanford the way Cal fans seem to resent us for not caring enough about them). I think there's a fair amount of respect between the teams themselves, which is good. As someone else noted, the two teams were pretty sporting during the game.
I have certainly enjoyed the back and forth the last few years. It definitely feels better to be on the winning side, though.
