Stanford's punt coverage might not have been as bad as it appears from the stats. Stanford punted just 32 times last season. Only 10 of those punts were returned, the fewest punt returns allowed by any conference team. In the opening game against Sacramento St., Stanford allowed a 70 yard punt return for a TD. Over the rest of the season, the other 9 punt returns against Stanford covered a combined total of 60 yards, an average of 6.7 yards per return. The 70 yard return by Sac St. pushed the average punt return allowed up to 13.0 yards per return.

Except for the one long return, Stanford's punt coverage was OK. Because the total number of returns was small, the one long return made a big difference in the average.
