I joined the band when I was a student in the late 90's in part (perhaps mostly) because they were one of the few student groups enthusiastic about Stanford sports. The student section at most sporting events was tiny or empty, but the band was there, playing and cheering loudly the whole time. Diss them for their musicianship, but realize that without their enthusiasm, the energy level and interest at many Stanford sporting events would be virtually nil. I was a terrible musician, but I was there, rain or shine, for many Stanford games when the students and alums were taking the day off. And running from dorm to dorm during dead week and gathering students to go dance on the quad never got old.
The band is a great institution on campus, even if they make a few missteps. And I'm not referring to any of the ND, BYU, spotted owl or other shows because it's fantastic when the stir the pot.
