Good for him! This recent period of Stanford football greatness has certainly muddied my NFL fandom waters. I've always been a Broncos and Vikings fan, but I found myself rooting for Andrew/Coby et al. to beat the Broncos in last year's playoffs, and I stood up and cheered for Zach when he scored a TD against the Vikings his rookie year. My disappointment at the Broncos losing the Super Bowl to the Seahawks was tempered by real pleasure at seeing Sherman and Baldwin get a ring.Â
I've had some fellow NFL fans chide me for disloyalty in this way, but I view it as being even more loyal to the people that have brought me joy as a Stanford football fan. If I were to stop rooting for Andrew Luck just because he went to a different team than the one I've grown up rooting for, wouldn't that be a worse betrayal than rooting for him to beat the Broncos in one game?Â
The one constant, of course, has been dislike for the Patriots and the Packers. (Ty Montgomery's presence on the GB roster wasn't enough to overcome years of revulsion toward that team, but I still smiled at his successes.) But I shudder to think what I'll do when New England inevitably drafts Christian McCaffrey and adjusts their schemes to make him a star. I'm sure my Stanford fandom will win out, but it makes for strange bedfellows. How could I possibly root against Christian in the NFL?Â
