Looks like Stanford has screened incoming athletes for sickle cell since 2009:

Starting in 2009, the Stanford Sports Medicine program will implement sickle cell trait
screening of all incoming student athletes. Sickle cell trait screening is done by a
simple blood test during the pre-participation physical exam process.
