A 5-2 scheme represents the number of linemen and linebackers in a front seven. It has two defensive ends, two defensive tackles, one nose tackle, and two inside linebackers. This scheme places emphasis on stopping the run and pressuring the QB on passing plays.
A 4-3 scheme has two defensive ends (hand down on the ground or stand up depending on the play), two interior defensive linemen, and three linebackers. USC in recent years used one DT and one NT for its interior positions.
