Just me or do 7 rounds of golf over 6 days seem a bit excessive?

The downside of the current match play is that it puts greater demands on the players.  It is certainly more exciting, but that's a lot of golf. I almost wonder if they could do with 54 holes of golf instead of 72 to get a final 8.
