As someone posted somewhere on the 'board before, the "official" version of the story suggests that the block "S" with the green tree is the preferred logo but when two colors are not possible, then the tree need not be green. Maybe there is an "official" stance and then the "let's be real" stance. I don't know.

For the Stanford Block "S" with Tree, the preferred presentation is in two colors: Cardinal and green. The line around the tree and the line within the outside edge of the letter "S" are always shown in white.
