I think the Ducks defense during the Chip Kelly and the first year of the Helfrich era era was usually decent, but things went off the rail last year. I think they are likely in for another sub-par year defensively again this year.

You're right that the Duck defense was significantly worse last year than it had been in the past, and while not lock down prior to 2015 you could  consider it at least decent. However, when Vernon Adams was healthy last year, the Ducks won anyway. That's why I think finding a capable replacement for him is the most crucial problem facing them.
