I have a question about the match ups with Washington, specifically about their receivers and our second string defensive backs.
One of the great things about Stanford's defensive secondary is that both meeks and holder are tall and strong lockdown corners so they can compete with any receiver, including big, physical ones. As far as I know from what I've seen of Washington, is that they have inconsistent team speed and inconsistent skills.
For example I know John Ross is very fast, I think he might be the fastest person on the field Friday, and I know that Pettis is a productive receiver, but do they have other speedy capable receivers?
To me the number of reliable, speedy receivers is a key matchup question with the injuries. If only John Ross is fast, do we have one remaining corner fast enough to cover him? How does our number two defensive back match up with Pettis? Do they have a number three and number four receiver who is fast and consistent who could exploit our remaining nickel and dime backs?
Also, my recollection from the Portland State and Arizona games is that they like to throw to their tight ends for big gains, but the tight ends are large but not too fast, and not totally consistent catching. Is that what other people have seen as well? It could make it easier for a strong safety or a linebacker to cover them.
Or, how many good receivers does Washington have, and how do they match up with our remaining defensive backs?
