There are ways you can influence the numbers of takeaways but if you recover more than 50+% of your fumbles or intercept a really high percentage, it's more luck than skill. Turnovers are notoriously volatile statistics.

You can coach some things. Stanford, for example, has for years been a low giveaway, low takeaway team - which seems to be connected to not wanting to take risks on either side.
Still, turnover margin have long been known to be one of the top backward looking indicators and one of the worst forward looking indicators; which mostly shows that turnovers are very important but largely random when they happen.
