Most of the posts over there more or less state this is a stupid excuse.
On the other hand, it is true that not everyone can be Stanford.
Given the current scholastic distribution of talented football players in high schools, there is not room for very many successful college teams with serious academic qualifications for football players. There are clearly enough for a few - as some private universities with some kind of standards are competing well and there are several good students on football teams sprinkled around the country. But Stanford has a decided advantage recruiting those kids; and the numbers are such that it gets tougher and tougher for each team that tries to go that route.
One would like to think that if enough places started really requiring decent academics, the pool of players would respond and there would be an increase in football-kids paying attention to academics. But, that isn't where we are now.
