As much as I want to just be happy for CMAC and move on to getting excited to watch Love/Irwin/Schultz featured in the Sun Bowl, the thing I keep coming back to is this idea that he has decided playing THIS game is not worth his future risk. Why this game and not the game against Rice? Why play any game after we were eliminated from the Pac12 North? Why play any game after we got blown out by UW and clearly had no shot at the CFP? I guess I'm just old fashioned that you go to a school and suit up for the love of the school, your teammates and the game. The longer I watch college football, the more torn I feel about it. Clearly it is not a pure amateur athletic pursuit, nor has it been for a long time, if ever. But it feels like it's becoming much less so than when I was at Stanford 20 years ago.
Perhaps I'd feel more good will if he'd confided that this was due to injuries and that if he were able to perform at a high level, he'd be willing to play. But the statement as it exists just leaves me wondering why these guys bother to play at all once the games no longer have an impact on their future earning potential.
But I am excited to see what those other guys do without him.
