Relevant article justifying Cmac's decision and speculating that more may follow. Could be interesting to see what happens to this lucrative-for-everybody-but-the-players bowl system if more players decide to opt out.
Good and honest article.
The other elephant in the room is the fact that outside of the CFB playoffs and (perhaps) the NY6 games, the rest of the bowls are quasi bowls--a chance for alums and fans to follow their boys and sponsors and media and athletic departments to fatten their pockets, but in the context of significance? Nada, as they say in El Paso.
Maybe we lose a few Director Cup points if Christian and/or Solly don't play, but how important is that in the game of life? Amongst the really good ideas above on this thread include:
--two potential superstars at the highest level improve their chances to stay healthy and/or become healthier by not playing and rather preparing for the first of their 40-50 year contributions to themselves, their families and society.
--outside of the potential two we have a team of 100+ players who will give their all to play, take their chances and strive to win.
--and why not let true freshmen play in quasi bowls (or even the big bowls) without burning a red shirt? Why not think of the bowls as the first year of the next season, and give the freshmen (e.g. Speight, Costello, Smith (if healthy), and members of the the Frosh D, etc. a chance to show what they can do in a real life/game situation?
