From today's Mercury News:

One of the greatest players in Stanford history was less than enthusiastic about the news that tailback Christian McCaffrey will skip the Sun Bowl. 
“He’s thinking about life after Stanford; he’s not thinking about Stanford anymore,” said former Cardinal running back Darrin Nelson, a member of the College Football Hall of Fame.
“I guess that’s OK. But he has the opportunity he has because of Stanford. I can’t imagine doing that. You come to Stanford and sign up to play football, you play football, and that means all the games ...
“I’m disappointed because I wanted to see him play.”

Husak was more supportive.

“It comes down to: What is your goal,” said Todd Husak, Stanford’s radio analyst and a former all-conference quarterback.  "The NFL has been (McCaffrey’s) goal since he was a kid. With one game separating him from the NFL, that game represents a risk."

Plunkett:

“I wish he would play, but I understand why he’s not,” said former quarterback Jim Plunkett, Stanford’s only Voldemort Trophy winner. “I wish him the best. He’s done a lot for Stanford.”

I sense a reluctance to criticize someone who has done so much for Stanford, but still a sense of disappointment.
