To be fair, I think every program values w/l record to some degree. And Stanford (and to a lesser degree of success on the field, places like Vanderbilt and Northwestern) have proven that high graduation rates and on-field success are not mutually exclusive. Dykes helped to deliver on one part of that equation (cannot assume he is the sole factor in improved academics), but failed on the other. Add on top of that the repeated interviews with other places, makes one wonder if he actually believes academic and athletic success can go together, in spite of the examples around him.Â
That actually brings up my greatest reservation about whether Chip Kelley would be a great fit at Cal: is he wiling to go to a program that really is committed to both? (assuming for a moment that Cal really does want both forms of success.) Why not wait for a program that really only cares about football? OTOH, Kelley is definitely a Pac-12 guy, based not only on his track record but also his focus when he had personnel control in Philadelphia at repeatedly drafting Pac-12 players. Maybe this conference is part of his comfort zone.
